How does weather-based watering work?
Your address and local weather
Your address is enough: the app pulls 10 years of local weather archives and follows the forecast every day.
Your zones, plants and soil
Draw your zones, add your plants from over 200 plants and varieties and set the soil, exposure and watering method of each one.

Every day, the zones to water. With Gardena smart Water Control valves, watering runs automatically.
The calculation
What does the calculation take into account?
A water balance for each zone, using the FAO-56 method, the reference of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
FAO · Crop evapotranspiration (Irrigation and Drainage Paper 56)- Your plants: each crop's needs, and the soil and exposure of each zone.
- The weather: rain, heat and evaporation, from the forecast where you live.
- The soil: moisture estimated every day without a sensor, refined by a Gardena sensor or a Netatmo station.
- Changes: an edited zone is recalculated from the next day, without touching today's watering.

Which app waters the garden based on the weather?
Garden Connect works out the water need of each zone of your garden every day with the FAO-56 water balance, from your plants, your soil, the exposure and the local weather. With Gardena smart Water Control valves, watering runs automatically; without connected hardware, the app tells you when to water.
Do I need a soil moisture sensor?
No. Soil moisture in each zone is estimated every day from the weather, the soil and past waterings. A Gardena smart Sensor refines that estimate, and a Netatmo station refines the local weather with the temperature and humidity measured at your place.
How much water can I save?
Up to 50% compared with a standard watering schedule, by watering only the zones that need it and taking rain into account. The app also shows the quantity and duration for each zone, and the water saved. This matches the 30-50% savings reported for irrigation driven by the FAO-56 method, and was observed in the field during the summer 2026 droughts: 50% less water used than in previous years.
Is the app free?
Watering calculation is part of the Premium subscription. The yearly plan starts with a 14-day free trial, then costs €44.99 per year; the monthly plan costs €7.99 per month, with no commitment. Joining a friend's or family member's garden stays free. Garden Connect runs on iOS, Android and the web.
